The more resolutely you plumb the question “Who or what am I?”— the more unavoidable the realization that you are nothing at all apart from everything else. Yet again, the more you strive for some kind of perfection or mastery—in morals, art, or spirituality— the more you see that you are playing a rarefied and lofty form of the old ego-game, and that your attainment of any height is apparent to yourself and to others only by contrast with someone else’s depth or failure.

Most of what we’re taught is simply illusion. I start school when I’m five, and what’s the first thing I’m taught? I am important, I’m a citizen of the United States, I could be president because this is like no other country. Well, first I couldn’t be president for twenty reasons. Then this country is like the others.

And finally the United States is an illusion.

We burn their villages, we cut down their fruit trees, we massacre their women and children. Is this, I ask you, the best way to teach them to love civilization?
